Reliance ADAG Signs Deal with Dreamworks Studios

Reliance ADAG in one of the largest deals in global cinema through its subsidiary Reliance Big Entertainment signed a deal with Dreamworks Studios to make 6 films a year for global audiences. The US$825 million deal was signed between Anil Ambani, Chairman of Reliance ADAG and Hollywood’s ace filmmaker Steven Spielberg on Wednesday.

Anil Ambani and Steven Spielberg, in a joint press conference said the movies produced by Dreamworks Studios will be distributed by Walt Disney globally, with the distribution rights in India will be held by Reliance Big Entertainment. Anil Ambani further said "Clearly, the outlay of US$825 million is what we are aiming at in the next 3 years, of this US$325 million will be in the form of equity, US$150 million will come from Disney, while the rest will come from banks and others".

Steven Spielberg said “I am looking forward to produce films. I will also visit India soon to meet with filmmakers, scriptwriters and actors to see how they can all collaborate. We have a golden opportunity to have a better control over our product". Earlier Dreamworks Studios faced strained relationship after it was sold to Viacom subsidiary Paramount Pictures in 2006 for US$1.6 billion. He further said "I am very excited that we are in business again and we are independent of any motion picture studio. Now, we feel we have the independence in our partnership with Reliance". Some of the films that will be produced under the deal include ‘39 Clues’, ‘Cowboys and Aliens’, ‘Dinner For Schmucks’, ‘Motorcade’ and ‘Hereafter’ under various genres including thriller, action, comedy and family drama.

Anil Ambani said his associate Amitabh Jhunjhunwala and Steven Spielberg's partner Stacey Snider, who has worked on projects like ‘Eric Brockovich’, ‘The Mummy’ and ‘American Pie’ will sit on the Dreamworks board. It may be known that till date ‘Reliance Big Entertainment’ has signed creative partnership deals with 9 leading production entities in the Hollywood that are associated with leading Hollywood actors/actresses. In 2008, it entered into pacts to develop Hollywood projects with firms owned by stars such as Brad Pitt, Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, Nicolas Cage, Jim Carrey and George Clooney.

Reliance ADAG through Reliance Big Entertainment also owns 428 cinema screens across India, the US, Malaysia and Mauritius. Apart from this it has presence across several platforms including FM radio, music, sports, gaming, animation, Internet and mobile portals, direct-to-home TV, Internet TV and mobile TV.
