Overall synopsis:
Farhan Qureshi and Raju Rastogi who were in engineering college together, set out on a long car ride; first to Shimla and then to Ladakh in search of their lost friend Rancho, a bright free-spirited student, who uses his charisma to convince his friends to think for themselves, follow their hearts' desires, and challenge the old-school educational system. Rancho is sometime wicked, sarcastic and with lot of energy and is always ready to rebel. The 3 friends sometimes run riot and sometimes are emotionally vulnerable. When Rancho falls for the spirited Pia Sahastrabudhhe (Kareena Kapoor) his clashes with her father college principal Viru Sahastrabudhhe/Virus (Boman Irani) makes him disappear mysteriously. How they get back together is for people to see.
Performances:
Aamir Khan on the other side of 40 has yet again given a fine performance as a 22 year old. RMadhavan and Sharman Joshi both in their 30s have given good performances. Sharman Joshi is outstanding from start to end. RMadhavan has less screen presence but still manages to leave an impact. The character of Chatur Ramalingam played by LA-based actor Omi Vaidya and Milimeter played by a young actor is worth mention. Kareena Kapoor, Mona Singh, Parikshit Sahni, Javed Jaffrey and Boman Irani have all done well in their small roles. The actors stand out in some scenes such as Kareena Kapoor walking out of her marriage ceremony, Mona Singh delivering a baby on the college table tennis table with Aamir Khan using a suction device attached to a vacuum cleaner to bring out the baby, while the students look on.
Technical Values:
The songs especially Aal Izz Well and Behti Hawa Sa Tha Woh are a delight to watch on the screen, with beautiful music by Shantanu Moitra. The scenes between Aamir Khan and Boman Irani have been shot extra-ordinarily without getting overdramatic. Editing by Rajkumar Hirani is crisp. Choreography by Avit Dias ('All Izz Well') and Bosco-Caesar ('Zoobie Doobie') is eye-catching. The background score by Sanjay Wandrekar, Atul Raninga, and Shantanu Moitra is excellent. Cinematography by Muraleedharan C.K.' is outstanding.
Conclusion:
3 Idiots loosely based on Five Point Someone by Chetan Bhagat setting but goes beyond the book in terms of the story. The screenplay by Abhijit Joshi, Rajkumar Hirani despite 2 major mistakes is the mainstay of the film. The film stands out as an attempt to give whole new dimension to movies as per adaption from best selling books. This film will be major hit but not big as Aamir Khan's prevous release Ghajini .
