Overall synopsis:
Parag Dixit lives a dream life with a great job and a loving girlfriend Mansi. However, after a series of unfortunate events, when je is charged with drugs possession based on circumstantial evidence, he lands up in jail. Parag faces severe torture, and is forced to go naked once and is even thrown in to dark cell, and forced to spend the next few days in solitary confinement. In jail he meets a grizzled old veteran called Ghosh Babu, who says he's languishing in prison, despite getting so many international awards; because he was accused of siding with Naxals. Though his girlfriend tries to be with him, and comfort him, he goes down in depression. A shattered Parag with broken heart tries to adjust with life in prison, hoping to be free some day. His only salvation is Nawab (Manoj Bajpayee), a convict himself who believes Parag is innocent
Performances:
Neil Nitin Mukesh delivers his finest performance till date, easily the finest this year, eassaying the helplessness of under trial with amazing understanding. He deserves all praise for his extraordinary portrayal. Manoj Bajpayee pitches with a memorable performance, in a subdued role. Mugdha Godse with a non-glamorous look plays her part beautifully. Aarya Babbar is fantastic, and has made people sit and take notice of his talent. Chetan Pandit and Rahul Singh are effective.
Technical Values:
The film is based on a subject very seldom tried in Bollywood. The films script by Madhur Bhandarkar, Manoj Tyagi and Anuradha Tiwari keeps you engaged. Raghuvir Shekhawat has written strack real dialogues. Kalpesh Bhandarkar's cinematography is first class. Nitin Chandrakant Desai's prison set is just great. Not much scope for songs but still the 3 songs don’t seem to be out of sync.
Conclusion:
The film will appeal to those who want to see hard-hitting, realistic films. Madhur Bhandarkar has previously delivered films like Traffic Signal, Fashion and Chandni Bar. The film tries to portray the helplessness of under trails and convicts. It also tries to show the slackness in the judiciary and police matters in India. Despite being a hard hitting film is expected to hold on to its own at the box-office, despite a rom-com ‘Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani’ releasing on the same date.
