Plot:

Aladin Chatterjee (Riteish Deshmukh) who lives in a fictitious township called Khwaish is bullied in school as the namesake of the fairy tale character by his classmates. One day he rubs a lamp and one fine day, Genius, the Genie (Amitabh Bachchan) comes out of the lamp. Genius before retirement has his three last wishes to grant to his final master Aladin. What happens to those 3 wishes is the film all about.

Overall synopsis:

Aladin Chatterjee (Riteish Deshmukh), is a college going young man who is ridiculed for him being a namesake of ‘Aladin’, the fairy tale hero. But unlike ‘Aladin’ for this Aladin nothing is going right, even after he finds his ladylove Jasmine (Jacqueline Fernandez). But Aladin realizes he cant win his love, so he asks his Genie (Amitabh Bachchan) to help him, whom he finds out after rubbing a lamp. After that like the fairy tale everything start to fall in place. But the villain Ringmaster (Sanjay Dutt) who is an ex-genie wants to use the magic of lamp for himself over humankind. He fights with Aladin Chatterjee to gain control of the magic lamp. In the end Aladin not only succeeds in getting his love Jasmine but also manages to keep Genie with himself, after Genie manages to defeat the Ringmaster

Performances:

Riteish Deshmukh as Aladin is capable but he doesn’t go beyond imagination. Amitabh Bachchan is good as the Genie but gets loud at times. Sanjay Dutt does buffoonery as the Ringmaster. Jacqueline Fernandez looks stunning with her gorgeous looks. Over all everyone has given good performance. Ratna Pathak Shah and Mita Vashisht are wasted in an inconsequential role.

Technical Values:

Directot Sujoy Ghosh has tried to give a new meaning to the fairy tale. Genie, Aladin and Jasmine are okay but the character of Ringmaster as a masked sexy figure without a face is not good. The VFX effects by Charles Darby of Matrix, Harry Potterfame is decently done. But Sabu Cyril’s art direction gives a fantasy feel to the hill-station. Vishal-Shekhar’s musical is passable.

Conclusion:

Aladin by director Sujoy Ghosh who made a scintillating debut with ‘Jhankar Beats’, has tried to make a good film. However despite everything in its favor, the film is not up to the mark. Uninspiring dialogues and script as well as execution make the film formulaic. The film should have been made in a better manner, considering that it has 2 of Bollywoods biggest stars.
